Aidan Chiles And Oregon State, A Perfect Match
By STEVEN VAUGHAN, 750 THE GAME
Oregon State does it differently. It’s not about the highest recruits. It’s about culture and development.
Fresh off a ten win season, the hype is real in Corvallis, but it’s not just for 2023. Fans already are buzzing for the future of the program, and freshman 17-year-old Aidan Chiles is the reason.
Brandon Huffman, National Recruiting Editor for 247 Sports, joined John Canzano on 750 The Game and said that Aidan Chiles and the Beavers are a great fit, largely because Chiles is familiar with developing and waiting his turn.
“This is a relationship that when they (Oregon State) did recruit him and Oregon State got a commitment, Aidan was still a three-star. He wasn’t an elite quarterback. He wasn’t considered one of the elite quarterbacks.
“Aidan Chiles was going to Oregon State with the understanding they might have a returning starter this season. He wasn’t rushing himself.”
That sounds a lot like Oregon State. Come to the program with a desire to work, develop, and wait for your chance.
“This is a kid who really was a Junior in high school to be the guy,” Huffman continued. “So waiting and patience is something that kind of made what him the quarterback he is.”
Even after getting the starting job in high school, Chiles still had to wait to be noticed on the national level, said Huffman.
“He didn’t even get invited to the All-American Bowl until the last quarterback spot opened up as a result of an injury. He goes down there was probably the second best quarterback there the whole week.”
Oregon State brought in DJ Uiaglelei, a transfer from Clemson, who is expected to be the starting quarterback this season. But Aidan Chiles has been the talk of the Oregon State fans and he may see playing time sooner than later.
No matter if Chiles is the starter or the backup this season, Huffman thinks this is going to work out perfectly at Oregon State.
“I can go in and there’s not going to be the expectations on me to play right away, but if I do get asked to play right away. I will be ready,” Huffman said of Chiles’ attitude.
