Trail Blazers Not Renewing Two Assistant Coaches, Including Head Assistant Scott Brooks
By 750 THE GAME STAFF
It has been reported from numerous people that the Portland Trail Blazers will not be renewing the contracts of two of their assistant coaches. Head asstistant Scott Brooks and Rodney Billups, Chauncey’s brother, will not be on the Blazers staff next season.
Blazers are indeed not renewing lead assistant Scott Brooks or Rodney Billups, as the Oregonian reported. They now have three vacancies on Chauncey Billups’ staff with Steve Hetzel recently leaving to become Jordi Fernandez’s lead assistant in Brooklyn.

This makes it three open spots on the Blazers coaching staff as earlier Steve Hetzel accepted a job on the Brooklyn Nets’ coaching staff. There will be some shakeup on the Blazers staff, but does that mean that Chauncey Billups is in danger of losing his job as well?
Billups has one more guaranteed year on his deal and then the Blazers have a team option for 2025-26. So not retaining some of his assistants doesn’t mean Billups is in trouble of being fired, but it would mean that if he is not successful this season then the team may not pick up his option for the following year.
Another sign that Billups is safe is what Blazers GM Joe Cronin had to say at the end of the season. Cronin was asked if they are committed to Chauncey Billups going into next season. Cronin responded with “yes”.
