Oregon State MBB Adds 7-foot-2 Maryland Center Chol Marial via Transfer

The Oregon State Beavers are adding some serious size to their Elite Eight men’s basketball squad.

Chol Marial, 7-foot-2, spent the last two seasons with the Maryland Terrapins. The South Sudan native entered the transfer portal on March 31.

Marial played only 30 games (12 as a freshman, 18 last year) in his time at Maryland. He averaged just 6.2 minutes last season and 5.4 minutes per game his first year.

Marial dealt with some leg injuries his freshman year. He did actually play double-digit minutes in three of the first four games in 2020-21, but his minutes dropped throughout the season.

He’s averaged just 1.3 points and 1.3 rebounds per game over his two collegiate seasons. His career-high in points (seven) came against Old Dominion last year while his best rebound game (five) was his first game in college (Dec. 29 2019 against Bryant).

However, before his limited time on the court as a Terp, Marial was the No. 60 nationally ranked high school recruit in 2019 by ESPN.

The Beavs are pretty loaded in the post now. Marial joins Roman Silva as the only 7-footers on the roster. Silva was a senior last year, but he plans return thanks to the NCAA’s eligibility rules due to COVID-19.

Oregon State also has Maurice Calloo, Joey Potts and Dearon Tucker all listed at 6’10”. Finally, Rodrigue Andela also played in the post at 6’8″.
