Jonathan Smith Knows San Diego State Will Provide A Challenge For Oregon State In Week 3

By STEVEN VAUGHAN, 750 THE GAME

Utah, Arizona, UCLA, and Arizona State. Those are the Pac-12 schools San Diego State has beaten in the last five years in the non-conference. This Saturday, San Diego State looks to add another team to the list: the Oregon State Beavers.

San Diego State is 2-1 on the season with wins against Ohio and Idaho State and a loss against UCLA. The Aztecs are a team that has to be taken seriously especially coming after a game where the Beavers defeated an FCS team in UC Davis a week ago.

Oregon State head football coach Jonathan Smith joined the Bald Faced Truth with John Canzano and told Canzano that he knows San Diego State is dangerous because of their style of play.

“They attack,” Smith said on 750 The Game. “There’s a lot of movement on the defensive line. They’re going to challenge you. They got some different looks you’re not going to see week in and week out on defensively that showed up.”

Coach Smith likes the Aztec offense and thinks they can do some good things.

“I think offensively they make things physical. I think the quarterback is gifted in regards to his athleticism. He can make some throws.”

If San Diego State is to pull off the upset they are going to need their quarterback, Jalen Mayden, to play well. Mayden struggled last week against UCLA throwing three interceptions including one at the goal line which Jonathan Smith said really turned the game in the Aztecs 35-10 loss to UCLA.

“They were right in that game,” said the Beavs head coach. “I know it was lopsided in the score. But they (San Diego State) got the ball on the one foot line going in and they turned it over. And then they turned it over another time. That’s a different game if they execute at that point.”

The Beavers are 24.5-point favorites over San Diego State this Saturday. Vegas thinks it should be an easy win for the Beavers. Jonathan Smith knows that if Oregon State wants to reach the level that they want to reach, every game is going to be a fight.
