John Canzano named Top-10 sports columnist in 2019 by APSE
He’s not in it for the awards, but we are proud to announce that our own John Canzano (Bald Faced Truth, Weekdays 12-3pm) has been named a top-ten sports columnist by the Associated Press Sports Editors association for his outstanding work in 2019.
Canzano’s featured pieces for the APSE contest, as put together by the editors at The Oregonian/OregonLive, are wide-ranging in theme and emotion. It includes reflection on the tragic death of Portland State athlete Deante Strickland, the tradition and meaning of the Rose Bowl Game, Mario Cristobal delivering on a promise to Oregon, and the futility of the Pac-12 Networks dog-and-pony show.
The recognition comes after the National Sports Media Association (NSMA) named Canzano the Oregon Sportscaster of the Year, the second time he’s won the award in his career. He has also been named the Oregon Sportswriter of the Year five times.
Canzano posted his gratitude on social media.
Honored to be recognized by @APSE_sportmedia alongside the columnists on this list — including the great Sally Jenkins, who has always been supportive and encouraging.
The @Oregonian has so many talented editors and writers and continues to foster good work. Grateful for that. https://t.co/0OTs4ZHYeT
