The Portland Timbers have acquired Uruguayan forward Jonathan Rodríguez in a full transfer from LIGA MX side Club América which makes it official. There had been rumors of this for a while now, but Rodriguez is now officially a Portland Timber.

Rodriguez is commonly known by his nickname Cabecita. Cabecita joins the Timbers after spending eight seasons in Mexico’s top-tier league LIGA MX and registering a total of 108 goals and 27 assists in 277 appearances across all competitions.

Rodriguez will bender contract through 2026 with a club option in 2027, Rodríguez will occupy a Designated Player spot and an international spot on the roster. Rodriguez is one of the better international players. Rodriguez spent two seasons with Mexico’s reigning champion Club América, where he scored 21 goals and  had seven assists in 65 appearances across all competitions. Last season, Rodríguez notched nine goals and three assists in 24 appearances, helping the club earn their 14th championship during the 2023 LIGA MX Apertura.

Cabecita will join the Timbers and will form a great combo with Evander as the Timbers look to continue their hot start to the 2024 season. It is still not known when Rodriguez will take the pitch for the Timbers, but an introductory press conference is scheduled for Thursday where we hope to find out more answers.

The Portland Timbers will be at Providence Park on Saturday when they take on the Philadelphia Union. Pregame coverage will start at 6:30 with first kick at 7:30 on your home for Portland Timbers soccer 750 The Game.
