Saints Walk-Off Texans, Raiders Hold off Broncos in MNF Doubleheader
With how disappointing the first half was between the Saints and the Texans, the second half and specifically the final 55 seconds of the game were spectacular.
The Saints were held down for most first half, managing just a field goal on the board. Houston on the other hand was up 14-3 at the break off a passing and rushing touchdown from Deshaun Watson.
New Orleans got some help from their fans, and the defense stepped up as well. The Saints held the Texans offense to just 14 points in the final 30. The Drew Brees-led offense, however, scored 27 second half points.
As mentioned the final 55 seconds were wild. New Orleans kicked a 47-yard Will Lutz field goal to take a 27-21 lead with 50 seconds left. Then, Watson led the Texans 75 yards in 13 seconds, that’s not a typo, to score on a 37-yard TD pass to Kenny Stills. 28-27 Texans.
With 37 seconds and one timeout, Brees got New Orleans to the Houston 40 after 35 seconds. Lutz then stepped up and demolished a career-long 58-yard field goal to win in a walk-off. Saints win 30-28. You can hear the highlights below.
As for game two, the Broncos and Raiders was not nearly as entertaining. Denver’s offense has not been good since Peyton Manning retired (and some might argue before Manning retired) after Super Bowl 50.
Oakland looked a lot better on defense than expected, and the Raiders were not affected with the Antonio Brown controversies during the preseason.
The Raiders held Denver scoreless in the first half, 14-0 Oakland led at the break. Despite the Broncos scoring 16 points in the final 30 minutes, Oakland also scored 10 to hold off Denver’s late push. The Raiders win 24-16.
