Portland Upsets Top Seeded North Carolina, 1-0, Behind Weaver’s First NWSL Goal

North Carolina went 4-0 in the preliminary round, including a win against Portland. The Thorns flipped the script on the Courage in the quarterfinals on Friday morning.
Portland was the only team to score against NC in the opening rounds; the Courage had a goal 7-1 goal advantage. In the quarterfinals first match on Friday, the Thorns came out on top 1-0.
Former Washington State Cougar star, and 2020 No. 2 overall pick, Morgan Weaver picked up her first National Women’s Soccer League goal, and it sends Portland to the next round.

Not to be forgotten, Thorns keeper Britt Ellen Eckerstrom was spectacular. The Courage had eight shots on goal (21 shots overall), and Portland stopped them all, including these three incredible stops.
