Evander delivered a banger of a goal in the 33rd minute, Felipe Mora scored for the first time in over a year, and the Portland Timbers defeated San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 in their first match of the inaugural League’s Cup at Providence Park.

The Timbers ascend to the top of West Group 1 with a full three points thanks to a regulation victory. San Jose remains on no points. Liga MX titan Tigres UNAM invades Portland on Wednesday to face the Timbers in what will be Tigres’ initial match in the tournament.

Evander now has a team-best six goals scored with his first-half stunner.

Mora scored for the first time since July 17, 2022 against Vancouver. He has been sidelined for the better part of the past two seasons with a pair of separate knee injuries requiring surgery.
