In his opening segment of the Bald Faced Truth today, John Canzano discussed his thoughts on the decision from the universities to change the Oregon and Oregon State rivalry series name.

Here are some of the snippets, and at the bottom you can listen to the full opening segment.

“I kinda shrug at the idea that the Civil War is going away, and yet I see people on social media who are literally tweeting that they’re done with their season tickets. ‘This is it. It’s the final straw! It’s not coronavirus that’s making me think about turning in my season tickets.’ It’s not ‘hey that the football games haven’t been that entertaining,’ it’s ‘hey, this Civil War thing is so politically correct that I’m going to throw my tickets back.'”

“I don’t mind [the change] at all. Look, if you’re going to rename this game, let’s give it a name that fits. Let’s call it the Platypus Bowl. Let’s come up with something else.”

“I never really felt like Civil War fit Oregon and Oregon State.”

“By the way, if you want to throw your season tickets back, throw your season tickets back because the kickoff times are unpredictable, or throw your season tickets back because there’s a pandemic going on and you’re not sure you’re going to be safe at the stadium. But if this is your dealbreaker, I want you to take a giant step backwards, take a deep breath, count to ten and then we can start things over. Okay?”

“None of the history [of the rivalry] changes.”
