White Sox Outlast Mariners 9-7 in Nearly Four-Hour Affair
Friday the 13th was a bit of a tease for the Mariners. Kyle Seager’s face above says it all.
Seattle started by giving up a run in the first inning, but they responded with three of their own. Chicago then rattled off seven straight runs between the second and fourth innings. The M’s got within a run just to give up a home run late.
The Mariners pitching was subpar. Yusei Kikuchi started and gave up five earned runs in less than three innings of work. Wade LeBlanc followed Kikuchi and gave up three earned in two innings.
After a solo home run from José Abreu in the first inning, the M’s got three walks and scored all three. However, the lead was short-lived.
The M’s 3-1 margin disappeared with a Chicago scoring one in the second and three in the third. The Sox scoring barrage was capped off with third baseman Yoan Moncada’s 3-run, bases-clearing double, which put Chicago up 8-3 in the fourth.
The Mariners clawed all the way back to 8-7 after Daniel Vogelbach’s pinch-hit 2-run double in the eighth inning.
However, Austin Adams stepped to the mound, and on his second pitch the M’s reliever gave up a solo homer to Eloy Jiménez in the ninth.
Omar Narváez tried to keep the M’s hopes alive with a two out single, but Tom Murphy followed with a ground out to Moncada to end the game.
White Sox win 9-7 in three hours and 47 minutes.
