Timbers Win 2nd In A Row, Beat Chicago 3-2
All Brian Fernandez does is score goals. His brace tonight led the Timbers to their 2nd straight win as Portland beat Chicago 3-2 at Providence Park. Fernandez has now scored nine goals in 12 regular season appearances and 13 goals overall since joining the Timbers in May.
Wednesday’s game was Portland’s fourth match in a stretch of five games in 15 days, but if the Timbers were at all fatigued, they didn’t show it. The Timbers jumped out to an early lead on a beautiful chip shot by Jorge Moreira in the 11th minute, and Brian Fernandez followed that up with a goal of his own in the 21st minute to extend the Timbers lead.
Things got even worse for Chicago as after a video review in the 30th minute, Aleksandar Katai was issued a red card for elbowing Timbers defender Julio Cascante in the face. Portland dominated possession the rest of the way, and even though Chicago did not give up, playing a man down was too much to overcome.
With the win tonight, Portland jumped back into playoff position. The Timbers (11-9-4, 37 points) sit in seventh place in the Western Conference standings with 10 games left in the regular season.
Up next, it’s a rematch of MLS Cup 2018 as Atlanta United comes to town on Sunday night.
