The Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns FC announced a multi-year “strategic partnership” with TikTok, the “short-form mobile video” social media platform, on Tuesday.
The deal includes “sponsorship, media, promotional, community initiatives and content assets” for both the Timbers and Thorns.
TikTok will also be on both teams’ jerseys as the official sleeve partner in 2021. The social media platform name and logo will appear on the right sleeve for both jerseys “worn in-game and on authentic jerseys and other retail merchandise.”
The TikTok brand will be “featured” in several club areas, on virtual signage and digital platforms for the Timbers and Thorns. Also, Timber Joey’s jersey will have TikTok on the front during game days and at community events.
Both teams launched official accounts, and they will create content weekly including “highlights, behind-the-scenes, in-match, mascots, player and fan reactions.”
“TikTok is one of the world’s leading content and entertainment platforms and we are thrilled to be partnering with such a dynamic global brand,” said Mike Golub, Timbers and Thorns FC president of business in the press release. “The partnership is groundbreaking to have equal TikTok representation on both Timbers and Thorns jersey sleeves, and it will give us a unique ability to create and distribute content in collaboration with TikTok. We are very proud that TikTok chose our clubs as two of their first team sponsorship deals in the US.”
The Timbers and Thorns FC’s Stand Together platform is also working with TikTok to create “TikTok For Good,” a campaign where a portion of proceeds from each jersey sold will go to a local non-profit.
The teams will have four uniques scarves released throughout the season. “Each scarf will have a local beneficiary, and a portion of the sale of the scarf will be donated to the non-profit.” The first scarf will benefit Urban League of Portland.
Thorns FC jerseys with the TikTok patch can be purchased at ptfcauthentics.com, while Timbers jerseys can be found at shop.timbers.com.
Alaska Airlines remains the Timbers jersey partner on the front of the jersey for the 11th straight season.
2021’s jersey also is the fourth time the Timbers have had a collared jersey with buttons (2012 third jersey, 2014 third jersey, 2017 primary jersey).
As shown in the picture above, “the jock tag displays ‘Soccer City USA’ on the bottom left of the jersey, while also featuring ‘King of Clubs’ inside the neck tape as a nod to the Timbers Army tifo from 2011.”
