Timbers Have Big Chances But Fall Short to Minnesota United

The Portland Timbers were defeated 1-0 at home in heated, weather and the play on the pitch, match.

The score-line did not seem quite right with all the drama that ensued from players barking at each other to Steve Clark making multiple Sportscenter Top-10 worthy saves.

Portland opened the match in the same 5-at-the-back defensive shape as they did against Houston on Wednesday. The introduction of the new formation to the in-person Timber faithful was not a good one, leaking a goal to Minnesota’s Adrien Hunou in the 2nd minute.

The Loons were deserved victors through the opening 45 but Portland put their foot on the gas to begin the second half. Gio Saverse’s men had four good looks in the opening three minutes of the half but did not put any home. Then Minnesota took their turn but Steve Clark kept his team in the match not once but twice:

Portland’s hot run in June comes to an end after being undefeated this month before tonight. The Timbers fall to 4-1-5 and look to get back to .500 on Thursday as they travel to Texas to take on Austin FC.
