Timbers Defeat Rival Sounders 2-1 in Seattle, Earn a Crucial Three Points

The Portland Timbers headed into Sunday night’s match with their rival Seattle Sounders, coming off of a 2-3 defeat to the LA Galaxy. Portland would be looking to get their fourth straight victory over their rivals in Seattle.
The Timbers were able to strike first in the 9th minute of the match, when Diego Valeri found Eryk Williamson for the score. The goal was the first for Williamson in his MLS career.

A scary moment occurred early in the match, when Seba Blanco went down and left the game with a right knee injury. He would not return to the match.
After nearly the rest of the half went scoreless for both clubs, the Sounders’ Kelvin Leerdam was able to tie the game in the 42nd minute to make it 1-1 going into the break.

Portland would play a lot smoother in the second half, controlling the pace and getting a crucial goal from Felipe Mora in the 83rd minute.

Mora’s goal would prove the be the difference maker, as the Timbers held on down the stretch to secure the 2-1 victory.
The win for Portland earned them a very important three points, after failing to get a win in three straight matches following the MLS is Back tournament.
