The Oregon Ducks Are Playing Their Best Baseball Of The Season At Just The Right Time

The Oregon Ducks have advanced to the super regionals after sweeping the Santa Barbara regional. It is the second consecutive season the Ducks have made the super regionals. Last season Oregon lost to Oral Roberts in Eugene, a step shy of reaching the College World Series.

Oregon defeated San Diego in the opening game and then defeated Santa Barbara twice in a row to win the Santa Barbara regional. Now Oregon is heading to College Station to face Texas A&M in the super regionals.

Head coach Mark Wasikowski joined the Bald Faced Truth with John Canzano and talked about the regional in Santa Barbara. Wasikowski knew it was going to be tough, but he says Oregon is playing the best baseball they have all season long.

“We had our work cut out for us because the teams that were in our regional were really good,” Wasikowski said on 750 The Game. “Pretty much any regional is going to have good teams, but I think you got to play well to get out of it, and I thought our guys played our best baseball of the year the last couple of days. Now we’re advancing to the Super Regionals.”

It wasn’t easy for the Ducks in the regional. Oregon won their three games by a combined five runs. Wasikowski says because of the close games that the Ducks won they will be ready for tough situations in the super regionals.

“Just knowing that you can get through it it does have that kind of settling affect,” he said. “I know where we’re going this weekend. I’ve played in postseason games at Texas A&M, and I told the guys just to trust me that what we did and were able to accomplish that’s going to really help us this coming weekend when we get to Texas A&M.”

It’s been 70 years since the Ducks went to Omaha. Wasikowski says the team is very aware of this and they have talked about how it would be a great sendoff for the Pac-12 conference.

“One of the biggest signs out there is the 1954 Omaha team, and so our guys see that every single day,” Wasikowski said. “There’s a few of them still living and what an honor it would be for us to be able to, in the last year of the Pac-12 conference, to be the team to not only get to Omaha but wins the dang thing in honor of the Pac-12 conference.”

Wasikowski says the state of Oregon has the top two teams on the West Coast in Oregon and Oregon State. He isn’t surprised how the regionals turned out.

“I said it all year long that the two best teams on the West Coast were us and Oregon State,” he noted. “Depending on the day, we can beat them and they can beat us, and we saw that because it was pretty even back and forth between the two of us. They won their regional to get to a super regional. We go on the road and do the same and we’re both still here standing with a chance to win a national championship.”

Oregon starts the the College Station regional against Texas A&M on Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch on ESPN 2.
