Seahawks Comeback Falls Half-Inch Short, 49ers Clinch Top Seed in NFC with 26-21 win
The final game of the NFL regular season lived up to all the hype. San Francisco built big leads. Seattle came back. The Seahawks had a chance to win it late, and the 49ers defense stuffed it.
San Francisco jumped out to a 13-0 lead before halftime. The Seahawks defense got a quick three-and-out to start the second half, and Seattle’s offense finally showed up.
Russell Wilson threaded the ball into Tyler Lockett for a 14-yard touchdown to bring Seattle within six.
The Niners took their first of two 12-point leads after Raheem Mostert’s 2-yard touchdown, 19-7.
Marshawn Lynch’s first game in over a year saw him soar for a 1-yard touchdown, 19-14 49ers. But when the opponent scores, good teams respond.
Mostert scored his second rushing TD of the game and put San Francisco back up 12, 26-14. The Hawks scored again with 3:36 to play, 26-21.
Seattle’s defense stood strong and forced a three-and-out, and two timeouts remaining for Wilson.
The Seahawks got 49ers 12. 4th down. 10 yards to gain. Russell Wilson found John Ursua for the rookie’s first career catch for a first down, but not a touchdown.
With no timeouts left, Wilson spiked the ball to stop the clock. Suddenly the Seahawks had a chance to run Lynch from the 1-yard line to score. However, 40 seconds ticked off the play clock and out came the yellow hankie.
Delay of Game. The 5-yard penalty pushed Seattle to the 49ers six-yard line. Wilson threw two incompletions, including one that fans wanted a penalty on San Francisco.
4th down (again). Six yards to pay dirt. Wilson threw the ball to Jacob Hollister, whose route was a short slant and he was popped shy of the end zone. The Niners took over on downs and that was it.
San Francisco clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC with the win, while the loss sends Seattle to Philadelphia as the No. 5 seed.
