Report: Trail Blazers to Leave TV Partner NBCSNW for ROOT Sports in 2021-22

The Portland Trail Blazers deal with NBC Sports Northwest runs out after this season, and one report surfaced on Friday that the team will broadcast on ROOT SPORTS next year.

Maury Brown is a senior contributor with Forbes, and he’s stationed in Portland. In other words, he’s in the know.

The last time Portland had a TV-rights deal to make was in 2016. Blazers late-owner Paul Allen signed a four-year deal to stay with then-Comcast (aka CSN Northwest).

ROOT Sports actually offered more money and a longer deal than Comcast, but Allen wanted the network with a wider reach, according to The Oregonian.

At the time, ROOT’s deal to broadcast on Xfinity/Comcast was ending, but the two sides eventually came to an agreement and ROOT SPORTS is on Xfinity/Comcast right now.

According to ROOT SPORTS Channel Finder, ROOT SPORTS Northwest is available on AT&T TV, AT&T TV NOW, CenturyLink, DIRECTV, DISH Network, FiOS TV from Frontier and Xfinity/Comcast.

Obviously, neither the team nor NBC Sports NW have commented on Brown’s report.

We’ll update this story as more information emerges.
