Portland is a strong candidate to be awarded the next WNBA expansion franchise, according to Howard Megdal of The Next Hoops.
The talks between Portland and the WNBA have reached the league’s Board of Governors for approval, per the report.
The Athletic reports that the city of Portland is under “strong consideration” by the league for expansion.
The Bay Area was officially awarded an expansion franchise on Thursday that will begin play in 2025. It is believed Portland’s expansion franchise would follow the same timeline as the league grows from 12 to 14 teams.
Kirk Brown, co-founder of ZoomInfo and local billionaire, reportedly leads the ownership effort for Portland’s WNBA franchise.
