Oregon State Football Selected For 2023 Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State is headed to El Paso.

Oregon State will take on Notre Dame in the Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl as the 2023-24 bowl slate was revealed on Sunday. The game will be played on Friday, Dec. 29 with an 11 a.m. PT (12 p.m. in El Paso) kickoff at Sun Bowl Stadium. The 90th annual Sun Bowl game will air live on CBS.

Oregon State is making its 20th trip all-time to a bowl game, and the Beavers carry a 12-7 mark into this year’s trip. OSU is coming off a 30-3 win over Florida last season in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl.

Oregon State is making its third trip to the Texas-based bowl, and the Beavers are 2-0 in the previous two visits. OSU defeated Missouri, 39-38, in 2006, thanks to a 14-yard touchdown reception by Joe Newton with 23 seconds remaining. Yvenson Bernard then found the end zone on a successful 2-point conversion to cap a 10-win season.

Two years later, in 2008, Oregon State shut out Pittsburgh, 3-0. Justin Kahut kicked a 44-yard field goal with 2:18 remaining in the second quarter for the only score of the game. The OSU defense limited the Panthers to 178 yards of offense – 89 through the air and 89 on the ground.

OSU is 8-4 in 2023, posting its third consecutive winning record. The Beavers also finished with a 5-4 record in Pac-12 play, the team’s third straight winning record in league action. Notre Dame finished the regular season with a 9-3 record.

The Beavers head to the bowl game ranked 21st by the Associated Press and 22nd in the US LBM Coaches Poll. It’s the first time in program history that Oregon State finished the regular season ranked in every AP Top 25 poll.

OSU is also 19th per the College Football Playoff Rankings, which were released on Sunday.

The Beavers and Fighting Irish have played twice, both coming in bowl games. Oregon State defeated Notre Dame, 41-9, in the 2001 Fiesta Bowl, following that with a 38-21 victory in the 2004 Insight Bowl.
