Oregon State Battles In The Desert

TEMPE, Ariz. – Oregon State battled on the road on the second game of a back-to-back but fell 79-60 to Arizona State on Sunday.

Catarina Ferreira led the Beavers in scoring with a career-high 20 points, also snagging 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Kennedie Shuler contributed her second career-high of the young season with 16 points. The point guard also dished six assists with seven rebounds.

The Beavers had early runs of strong play on the offensive end. Shuler facilitated the offense en route to 9-6 and 12-8 starts with both the sophomore point guard and AJ Marotte dishing two assists. Turnovers hurt the Beavs later in the period as ASU ended the frame on an 11-0 run thanks to giveaways.

The second quarter was similar as the Beavers had bright spots with the play of Ferreira but struggled to get shots to fall before heading into the half trailing 42-26. The senior  scored a team-high eight points in the quarter and got to the line twice, navigating a physical ASU defense.

Oregon State’s defense kept it in the game early in the third. The Beavs held ASU to 3-of-8 shooting from the floor with three turnovers entering the media timeout. On the other end, Ferreira and Tiara Bolden got to the rim and the stripe for six points, but open three-pointers wouldn’t fall to close the gap further.

Despite the deficit, the Beavs fought all the way through. An 8-2 run in the fourth quarter cut into the deficit with Shuler getting to the stripe multiple times while Ferreira and Bolden raced to the rim for two more layups. OSU ultimately took the fourth quarter 22-20.

Oregon State is back on the road next week, battling Illinois on Friday at 5 p.m. PT. The game will be streamed on B1G+.
