Narvaez Big Game Not Enough After M’s ‘Opener’ Struggles, A’s Win 7-4
Omar Narvaez did everything he could to keep the Mariners close against the Athletics, but a dismal first inning costs Seattle a chance to win on Sunday.
The opener, Matt Carasiti, was not good for the M’s. Three batters in, it was 3-0 A’s.
Wade LeBlanc came in as the Seattle “headliner” and pitched well, but not before two more runs scored in the first; one run was charged to Carasiti while the other scored thanks to a Dylan Moore error in left field.
LeBlanc final line: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 2 BB. But the damage was already done.
As mentioned above, Narvaez tried whatever he could, but it wasn’t enough. The M’s catcher was responsible for all 4 runs that scored.
Narvaez finished 4-4, 4 RBI, 2 HR, and 2 runs scored. Not a bad final game before the All-Star break for the Seattle backstop.
Winning Pitcher, (4-1) Daniel Mengden: 5.1 IP, 3 ER, 2 K, 0 BB
Losing Pitcher, (0-1) Matt Carasiti: 0.1 IP, 4 ER, 1 K, 1 BB
Save (5), Liam Hendricks: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 K, 0 BB
The Mariners (and the rest of MLB) now take off for the All-Star Break. First baseman/DH Daniel Vogelbach will represent the M’s in Cleveland at the 2019 All-Star Game on Tuesday night.
