M’s Beat Padres for First Time in 3 Years, Split Series with 3-2 Win
Kyle Seager was all the offense early, and the M’s played small ball late to beat San Diego 3-2 on Wednesday at T-Mobile Park.
In the second inning, Seager grounded out, but scored Tom Murphy from third to tie the game at 1-1.
Two innings later, the M’s third baseman scorched a solo home run to give the Seattle a 2-1 lead.
The Padres smacked two home runs, including a sixth inning blast that tied the game at 2-2.
Mallex Smith led the eighth inning with a double, with some help from the ground. Padres left fielder Wil Myers dove for the ball Smith hit, but the ball decided not to stay in Myers glove after he hit the grass.
J.P. Crawford attempted to sacrifice Smith to third with no outs. Crawford’s bunt was not great, as it landed right in front of the catcher, Austin Hedges, who threw the ball to third.
Smith was called out at third, but immediately raised his hand toward Manager Scott Servais to signal Seattle should challenge. Servais agreed, and the umpires reversed the call after further review.
Big-hit threat Daniel Vogelbach stepped to the plate with one out, but instead of a bomb he hit a slow roller. The ball crawled to San Diego shortstop Fernando Tatís Jr., who tried to turn a double play.
Tatís threw to second, which beat Crawford to the bag, but the relay to first did not get the sprinting Vogelbach. With Vogey safe, Smith scored from third and gave the M’s the lead, and eventual winning score 3-2.
The last time Seattle beat San Diego was June 2, 2016. You may remember that game. The M’s were down 12-2 before scoring 14 straight runs and winning 16-13.
Seattle lost 7 straight games to San Diego since 2016. The win on Wednesday also snaps Seattle’s five-game losing streak.
