MLS Announces The 25 Greatest Nominees, Forgets Then Remembers Diego Chara

Major League Soccer released a list of 134 nominees for their The 25 Greatest celebration event. Surprisingly, when the list came out Portland Timbers stud Diego Chara was nowhere to be found.

Timbers and Thorns owner Merritt Paulson let the MLS Twitter account have it after noticing the omission.

Less than an hour later, Diego Chara’s name was suddenly on the list. However, MLS didn’t re-release the list or even fix their web post. As of posting this story, the site still cited 134 nominees, even though after adding Chara the number is now 135.

The 25 Greatest is another way to celebrate celebrating the 25 seasons of MLS soccer. A panel of 200 “MLS experts” throughout North America will select the 25 players “who have achieved the most on the field, drove the drove the narrative off the field and helped lay the foundation or set the course going forward.”

The only other current Timber of the 135 nominees is Diego Valeri. Past Timbers on the list include Nat Borchers, Will Johnson, Darlington Nagbe, Troy Perkins and Donovan Ricketts.

The 25 Greatest will be unveiled on Dec. 9, which is three days before the MLS Cup.

“The voting panel is comprised of four groups: MLS greats & emeritus (former players, coaches, staff), current MLS club staff, media members and broadcast partners (local and national). MLS invited panelists based on years of experience within MLS, geographic balance, and game expertise.”
