Oregon Ducks star QB Justin Herbert was drafted by the L.A. Chargers with the sixth overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

He takes over for departing QB Phillip Rivers and inherits a team that runs the west coast offense.

From the University of Oregon:

EUGENE, Ore. – The wait is over. After returning for his senior season despite being a projected first round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert’s NFL journey started on Thursday night when he was selected sixth overall in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers.

Herbert is the sixth QB and the 18th player in Oregon history taken in the first round of the NFL Draft. Oregon tied USC for the most first round QBs (4) since 1999, with all four QBs going in the top six.

The close of Herbert’s senior season punctuated a four-year career that saw the Eugene product finish second in program history in passing yards (10,541) and passing TDs (95), while setting career records for completions (827) and attempts (1,293). Herbert helped guide Oregon to its third Pac-12 Championship Game win and followed that up with a Rose Bowl Game Offensive MVP performance in the 28-27 victory over Wisconsin.

Just the second Pac-12 player to be named the William V. Campbell Trophy winner, Herbert finished 11th nationally with 32 passing TDs and threw for 3,417 yards in 2019, marks that were good for third and fourth best in program history. He became just the second player in Oregon history to throw for 3,000 yards in back-to-back seasons while completing 66.8 percent (286-of-428) of his passes with just six interceptions.

Oregon averaged 37.2 points per game over Herbert’s 42 career starts, going 29-13 over that span while he threw a TD in 40 of those contests. The program’s record holder for TD passes (54) inside Autzen Stadium, Herbert was sharp on the road too with 35 TD passes and just five interceptions in 15 Pac-12 road games.
