Gevani McCoy Named Oregon State Starting Quarterback For Week One

The Beavers have named a starting quarterback. Well, at least for the season opener.

On Monday, head coach Trent Bray announced Gevani McCoy as the team’s starting signal-caller for Saturday’s home game against Idaho State. Bray said the other QBs — Ben Gulbranson and Gabarri Johnson — will also likely see playing time in the game.

A transfer from Idaho, McCoy has been on an “uptick” according to Bray, who noted McCoy’s growing comfort in the offense being important to his selection as the starter, as well as his playmaking ability if the play breaks down.

McCoy is entering his fourth season of college football after spending three years at Idaho including a 2022 campaign that saw him named the Jerry Rice Award winner as the most outstanding freshman in the FCS.

Despite taking the majority of the starting snaps the last two years at Idaho, McCoy has never faced the Vandals’ in-state rival Idaho State, the team he leads Oregon State against on Saturday at Reser Stadium. McCoy’s former Idaho squad will be playing the No. 3 ranked Oregon Ducks in Eugene on Saturday in their season opener.

McCoy has 26 games of college football experience and in his breakout freshman season of 2022 amassed 27 touchdowns to just 7 interceptions. Last season he helped guide Idaho to the FCS playoffs and their first playoff win since 1993.

Per The Action Network, Oregon State is a 28.5-pt betting favorite against Idaho State on Saturday with an over/under set at 58.5.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m., televised on The CW.
