The Oregon Ducks will face a true freshman quarterback in the season opener.

Auburn has named Bo Nix its primary signal-caller to open the 2019 season August 31st against the Ducks at AT&T Stadium, per reports.  Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn notified his team of the decision on Tuesday afternoon.  Nix beat out redshirt freshman Joey Gatewood for the starting QB spot.

Nix will be the first true freshman starting quarterback in Auburn since 1946, back when the program ran the single-wing.  Nix’s father, Patrick Nix, was a standout Auburn quarterback as well from 1992-95 that included a perfect 11-0 campaign in ’93.

Now, Oregon defensive coordinator Andy Avalos and his staff can get gameplan-specific to face Nix.  But keep Gatewood in the back of your mind.  He’s a dual-threat guy that will likely see the field in some capacity in the season opener as well.

No.11 Oregon and No.16 Auburn kick off the season in the Advocare Coaches Classic on August 31st.
