Another Clean Sheet for Portland, Timbers Defeat Vancouver 1-0

Portland came into their Sunday night match with the Vancouver Whitecaps having won two in a row, defeating San Jose 6-1, and then keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders last Wednesday evening. Although the Timbers were playing at Providence Park on Sunday night, they were technically the away team.

It didn’t take long for the Timbers to get going, as Eryk Williamson found Felipe Mora who finished with a pretty header from inside the box in the 5th minute.

Both clubs would remain scoreless for the remainder of the first half. Vancouver racked up three yellow cards, but were level with the Timbers as far as shots on goal (2). When trailing at the half this season, the Whitecaps were 0-7 prior to Sunday’s match with Portland.

Steve Clark was in the right place at the right time to stop one of the biggest opportunities of the night for Vancouver.

Diego Valeri came in to replace Eryk Williamson to begin the second half of play, as the Timbers looked to extend their lead and close out a big victory at “home”.

The Timbers held off a few late surges by the Whitecaps to secure a very important three points, while keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory for the second match in a row.
