Timbers' Offense Heats Up In Win Against Fire

It took almost five weeks and over four hundred minutes of game play, but a Timbers' player finally found the back of the net.
It in the 20th minute when Kris Boyd tried to bicycle kick a corner kick in. Boyd missed but the ball landed right in front of Eric Brunner who was able to put in the close-range shot.

It was the first goal by a Timbers' player since Kris Boyd's make against the Los Angeles Galaxy on April 14th.


Portland's lead only lasted nineteen minutes before Jalil Anibaba found the back of the net after an errant Steve Smith clear. It was the first goal Troy Perkins has allowed in 377 minutes.

The fire would be shut out after that, though.

Portland, however, was able to get by Fire keeper Sean Johnson one more time.

In the 52nd minute, a Sal Zizzo corner hit off Fire player Logan Pause and squirted past Johnson. It was credited as an own goal. but it was Kris Boyd who was in the box on the play that caused the ball to ricochet off Pause's leg.


The victory improved Portland's record to 3-5-3 now out the season, and moved the team out of the cellar in the Western Conference.

Portland will play host to Valencia next on Wednesday in a friendly, before the Vancouver Whitecaps come to town Saturday for the Timbers' first game in the Cascadia Cup.
