The Portland Winterhawks got a hat trick from Ty Rattie in a 6-3 win over the Kelowna Rockets in Game 1 of their first round playoff series Friday in front of 6,243 fans Friday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

It was Rattie’s first career playoff hat trick, and came after he posted four hat tricks in the regular season. The Hawks peppered Kelowna throughout the game, outshooting the Rockets 55-29.

Kelowna opened the scoring at the 17:23 mark of the first period on a power play goal by Cody Chikie, taking a 1-0 lead into the second period.

The Hawks evened the game at the 7:42 mark of the second when Rattie went high over Kelowna netminder Adam Brown’s shoulder to even the game at 1-1. Rattie struck again four minutes later on a power play goal when he raced to the net and tapped in a pass from Sven Bartschi, who’d beaten several Rockets players on the rush, to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.

Kelowna tied it at the 17:08 mark when Zach Franko scored to make it 2-2, but with just 1.8 seconds remaining in the period Joe Morrow fired a shot from the left faceoff circle that beat Brown to give Portland a 3-2 lead going into the third.

The Hawks followed that late second period goal with an early tally in the third when Oliver Gabriel scored at the 3:43 mark to give Portland a 4-2 lead. Kelowna got back within one when Colton Sissons scored at the 8:06 mark to make it 4-3, but the Hawks again went up by two when Taylor Leier scored his first career playoff goal at the 10:53 mark to give Portland a 5-3 lead. Rattie then completed the hat trick at the 17:31 mark to give the Hawks the 6-3 win.

In addition to Rattie’s hat trick, the Hawks got two points apiece from Bartschi, Morrow and Marcel Noebels.

Mac Carruth got the win in net with 26 saves on 29 shots. Brown made 49 saves on 55 Portland shots.

The Hawks were 1-5 on the power play and 3-4 on the penalty kill.

This series is a rematch of last year’s second round series the Hawks won in six games to advance to the conference finals. Portland was also 4-0 against the Rockets during the regular season series.

The two teams are back on the ice for Game 2 tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Coliseum.

Peter Socotch, Producer of the Morning Sports Page and Chop, BFT's Producer, caught up with the guys after the game.
