Big news hit the sports world yesterday as Augusta National Golf Club decided to, for the first time in its history, grant females membership to the elite club by way of Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore. Our good friend Travis Rogers joined Chad on the MSP Tuesday to talk about the decision and to get his hilarious take on the other storylines of the sports world.
Rodgers asserts that this was not a decision made because of pressure. The members of Augusta National Golf Club are amongst the richest, elitist and most stubborn people you will ever come across. If they didn’t want to grant membership to women right now, they wouldn’t have. They must have just felt like it was finally time to end the segregation.
Rodgers also made sure to address Melky Cabrera’s issue with testosterone that was made public last week. Many have argued that his PED use may have forced him to miss out on more than $60million. Rodgers sees it a bit differently. He suggests that the PED use was actually the only thing that gave Cabrera a chance to earn decent money. Prior to this season, Cabrera was a career .280 hitter that averaged about five home runs a season. But this season, he was second in the league in average, he had hit 11 home runs and he was named MVP of the 2012 All Star game before getting busted for PEDs.. It may be true, that Cabrera will now give up what could have been a pretty lucrative contract, but it was the PEDs that put him in that position in the first place.
And last but not least, Rodgers made sure to mention the oh-so-public release of Chad Johnson by the Miami Dolphins. Rodgers argues that Johnson wasn’t cut because he beat up his wife, he was cut because he was a crappy player that beat up his wife. As he states, “If he were Calvin Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald, he could have gone all Rocky Balboa on his wife and they would have found a way to keep him.” But because he’s no longer the elite receiver from 2005, the Dolphins had no problem cutting ties.
