Known as one of the fiercest competitors on a team's defense, Junior Seau knew how to break through any offensive line and rattle the QB. Sadly, we lost this amazing athlete from a gunshot wound on Wednesday. He was 43 years old. Legal expert and talk show host of Courts & Sports, John Phillips weighs in on the life of Seau and weighs in on the possible root causes leading to his death.

Seau had some problems prior to his death, shortly after retiring in 2009. He was arrested for drug use after crashing his car.

Seau's death is the third suicide in the last couple of years as a result of depression, which could have been caused by head injuries sustained throughout his career. There is a substantial similarity between Seau's death and Dave Duerson who committed suicide.

Other downsides of NFL- 78% are broke 3 years after retire, many addicted to pain killers, dementia rates off the charts all of which could cause an athlete to commit suicide.
Seau was drafted in 1990 and played with the San Diego Chargers until 2003. He was traded to Miami and played two seasons with them until retiring.

After a day of retirement he joined the New England Patriots and led them to an AFC Championship Game then helped them with their undefeated regular season, finishing 18 straight wins before losing in the Super Bowl. He retired again, but rejoined New England for the 2008 and 2009 season. He's a multi-time pro bowler and has two AFC Championship rings.

John Phillips, a licensed practitioner of law, a host for legal and sports radio called “Courts & Sports”, joined the program to talk about the impact that Junior Seau had on the NFL both on and off the field, and the misconception that people have towards all NFL alumni, assuming they live lavish, full lives. In reality, though, some fall on hard times, disease and illness from playing the sport they love, and find themselves in a financial downward spiral. Phillips, who has appeared on The Today Show and many other media outlets, was selected as one of the top 100 Lawyers in Florida by the National Trial Lawyers Association and as the Best Lawyer in his town by the readers of its most circulated weekly newspaper in addition to being an acclaimed legal historian.

He talks with Chad  about how Seau never won a Super Bowl, but was a part of the 16-0 Patriots team, while ranking that rank an accomplishment equal to a Super Bowl championship. Where could that downfall for Seau have begun? Was he always considered a Hall of Famer, or has this latest tragedy, in a way, elevated that status and his accolades?

Phillips talks about depression in pro sports and the prevalence of it, both during and after playing. What is the onset of it? Can it be triggered by some sort of head injury? What other injuries might spurn from these types of injuries and what might fester come post-playing days? Phillips talks about why scientists believe Lou Gehrig may not have had Lou Gehrig's disease, but CTE a similar disease caused by repetitive head trauma.

All that and more with legal expert and talk show host, John Phillips on the MSP.
