Monday was a great night for the United States in swimming and our own John Canzano joined Chad on The Morning Sports Page Tuesday to chime in on the USA’s big night.
The big story of course, was Missy Franklin’s amazing swim in the Women’s 100-meter backstroke final. Canzano suggests that what we saw from Missy Monday night was only a small glimpse of the swimmer we will see in the future. To go from qualifying for an event in one heat, to taking gold in another event fourteen minutes later is simply amazing.
Franklin’s story is even more special considering the community she was competing for. Franklin resides in Aurora, Colorado and with the tragic events that took place in that community a couple weeks ago, her gold medal performance brought some happiness to people who truly needed it.
Canzano also discussed Michael Phelps’ performance thus far in the Olympics. Although some may have been disappointed with the opening 400 meter performance, Phelps is getting set up for a great Olympic final finish. canzano says that Phelps will compete better from here on out because his remaining events suit his elder body much better than the 400 did. And by the end of the day tomorrow, there is a good chance that Micaheal Phelps will be the most decorated Olympian of all time.
