The Timbers drop another close match/The Oregonian

May 31, 2012, 5:16 pm

The Timbers stunned Soccer City, USA by losing to a fifth-tier soccer club in the U.S. Open Cup. The men in green dominated Cal FC for ninety minutes, but ultimately lost the one-sided match on a last minute goal in extra time. John Spencer, Portland Timbers manager, joins the Bald Faced Truth with John Canzano to talk about the team’s loss to Cal FC. After this unexpected loss, the chorus of Spencer naysayers is growing louder.

Spencer responds to the criticism after last night’s devastating loss to Cal FC. He discusses where the problems are in the Timbers squad. He explains why the Timbers don’t have a talent issues, but a crisis of concentration in close games. He reveals why pressure is key to assuring wins. Spencer then comments on the pivotal role Merritt Paulson has played in the Timbers' success. He also talks about Timbers star Kris Boyd and whether he is a coachable player.
