Roger Goodell doled out punishment Wednesday against the New Orleans Saints for their involvement in a bounty system that had been in place the last three seasons. And the damage was unprecedented.
Head coach Sean Payton was suspended without pay for the entire upcoming season and the team was stripped of two future second-round picks and fined $500,000. Former Defensive Coordinator Greg Williams, who put the bounty system in place, was suspended indefinitely by Goodell and won't review his case until the completion of the 2012 season.
The bounty system allegedly involved over 20 Saints defensive players, and players were rewarded for either knocking out a player or having him carted off the field. Players with bounties put on them included Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton, Brett Favre, and Kurt Warner.
Jim Varney of the New Orleans Times-Picayune joined Brian Berger Wednesday afternoon to discuss the implications of Goodell's punishment, who fills in for Sean Payton, and how this affects the team's relationship with Drew Brees.
