Mark McGrath has been the lead singer for the pop group Sugar Ray since 1997 and he has been the co-host of Extra since 2004.  He joined Chad on Flight 750 Tuesday to talk about his career and explain to us how he came to be the star that he is now.

Mcgrath explains that he wasn’t always interested in music.  It was just something that happened when he realized his first dream wasn’t likely to happen.

“I thought I was going to be the point guard for the L.A. Lakers until about seventh grade.  I could shoot the trey but I didn’t really have the best handles.  And then as I found that out, simultaneously I was looking over at the TV and David Lee Roth was doing a giant scissor kick off the drum riser to Panama and I said 'that looks like a lot of fun'.”

McGrath also insists that he was not blessed with the great voice he has now.  It’s something he had to work on.

“I wasn’t born with talent.  No one put me on the Earth to sing, but I wanted to do it so bad so I just kind of willed myself to do it…The last thing God put me on this Earth to do was sing and I didn’t listen to him.”

And finally, McGrath talked about how his band got its start.

“We got really lucky…We put a demo tape into a pizza box and we sent it to every A&R guy from the East coast to the West coast and we got a couple nibbles and eventually we got signed off a video from one song.”

This was one of Chad’s favorite interviews that he’s ever had on the show, so be sure to check it out.  And if you’d like to check out Sugar Ray at Spirit Mountain Casino this weekend, just go to spiritmountain.com for tickets.  Tickets are starting at just $15.
