Mark Helfrich: Oregon's New Head Man

On Jan 16th, Chip Kelly left the Oregon Ducks become the newest head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and just four days later, Offensive Coordinator Mark Helfrich was promoted to fill his shoes. Helfrich joined Chad on Flight 750 Friday to discuss the process of being named the new head coach and what he hopes to bring to the new Ducks regime.
Helfrich explains that it has been a pretty hectic couple of weeks for both he and the Oregon Ducks program.
“It’s been an awesome. It’s been humbling it’s been exciting, it’s been frustrating, it’s been crazy…But the fact that we have eight of the 10 full-time coaches here from the last four years still here, that’s incredible.”
Helfrich also maintains that he has been fortunate to have been able to be taught so much from his peers.
“You learn from everybody. I think that’s one thing that you always try to do. It could be good. It could be bad. It could be a net-zero type of situation…I’ve been very fortunate with who I’ve worked for and where I’ve been. I’ve learned a lot of mostly great things and then certainly a couple things that I would do a little bit differently. More so than anything, you surround yourself with great people. And that’s what we’ve been very fortunate to have here, to hire here and to hopefully continue to recruit here.”
And finally, Helfrich implies that the Ducks should be in very good shape, even after the departure of the great Chip Kelly.
“We have a lot of talent back and that will certainly serve us well. I think more than anything going back to our foundation and going back to our culture and having those guys really be the pillars of all that – how we work, how we conduct ourselves off the field, community service, academics – all that stuff carries over.”
