June 29, 2012, 2:50 pm
Current Memphis Tiger Head Coach Josh Pastner joins Brian Berger to talk about Will Barton and Elliot Williams, two guys Josh recruited and now are on the Trail Blazers.
Brian first asked him about Will Barton and his time in college coaching him. Josh first mentions how he is a first round guy but the Blazers got him in the second round, and affirms that grabbing Will Barton at pick 40 was a steal. Josh continues to talk about how Will can score and has a high motor. In addition, Josh says how Will has a great personality and will fit in well in Portland. Will was the Conference USA Player of the Year and averaged 15.0 points per game through his two years at Memphis.
Josh Pastner is one of the youngest coaches in the NCAA at 34 and got the Memphis Tigers job at the age of 32. At age thirteen Josh wrote his own recruiting book and coached an AAU team at sixteen. He walked on at Arizona and was assistant there for six years getting a reputation for recruiting very well. He has coached the Memphis Tigers to two NCAA tournaments and two conference tournament championships. He talks about how the team has won over 70% of his games and how they have a 1,000 APR which is a perfect score in the NCAA. The APR measures academic performance, with graduation rate, along with athletics. Josh mentions how this is great score and having a bad APR could result in a post season ban, scholarship loss, or getting fired as head coach.
Brian finally asks Josh about one of his assistant coaches and former Blazer Damon Stoudamire. Josh has a high regard for Damon and expects him to be a head coach one day. In addition, Josh talks about how Damon could have still played in the NBA but left to become an assistant coach in the NBA and now in college. Josh and Damon played together in college at Arizona.
In addition listen to what Josh has to say about another Memphis Tiger and current Blazer Elliot Williams.
