Sports writers come and go and not only does it take talent to build a career out of writing but also timing and luck. Legendary sports writer Frank Deford had the talent as well as luck and timing on his side. Frank Deford stopped in-studio for an appearance on the Bald Faced Truth with John Canzano. Deford and Canzano open the segment talking about Deford’s new book “Over Time: My Life as a Sportswriter”. Deford talks about who got him to write the book and why he wrote it. Deford and Canzano have a discussion on sports writing and how the business has changed from Frank’s early days at Sports Illustrated to now. Canzano brings up the latest rift between Jim Rome and NBA Commissioner David Stern and whether or not a line was crossed during the interview between the two.

Frank and John have a discussion about the major sports in American and which of the major sports grew the most from the 60’s and 70’s. Frank is on the last stop of his book tour and will be appearing at Powell’s Books in downtown Portland. Frank talks about his love of independent book stores and the passion for books that is shared by him and the patrons of such book stores.
