Ducks Debate Defense with Doing

Rashad Bauman and Aaron Gipson used to terrorize offensive attacks while playing for the University of Oregon.  They have since teamed up again in Portland as coaches for the Jefferson high School Democrats.  The two former Duck legends joined Chad on The Morning Sports Page Tuesday to talk about their hopes for this year’s Jefferson squad and to reminisce about their former Duck Days.

Gipson asserts one of the main reasons he approached Bauman for one of the assistant positions was because of the confidence and swagger he played with – both as a member of the Ducks and the Cincinnati Bengals.  Gipson claimed that his colleague wasn’t cocky, just very certain of his abilities.  Who better to encourage young kids to be the best that he can be than a guy who never backed down from competition and never met an opponent that he didn’t think he could outplay?  And when Bauman heard about the opportunity, he insists that he was all in from the beginning.

The duo also went into specifics on how they would handle tough days and rough plays back in their Autzen days.  Bauman asserts that you can’t move on from plays like that without being tough and preparing properly.  You’re going to get beat sometime, when you do you have to have a short memory, otherwise you’re just going to be eaten up play after play.

Bauman and Gipson also talked about their former teacher and mentor, Oregon Defensive Coordinator Nick Aliotti.  Both Bauman and Gipson have a lot of respect for Coach Al and what he was able to do with them.  Both also seem pretty excited to see what sorts of defenses and blitz’s he can dial up this upcoming season with a veteran roster that has already won a Rose Bowl.
