Counts: Too much 1-on-1 in the NBA today

Former Oregon State Center and NBA player Mel Counts joined John Canzano today on The Bald Faced Truth to discuss basketball and the differences between when he got drafted into the NBA in 1964 and now. Counts’ also discusses his Olympic Gold medal from 1964, the training then, and what made the Celtics special at that time. Counts’ explains to Canzano that there is more one-on-one play in the NBA these days because there is more talent; he mentions Kevin Durant being the exception. Canzano asked Count about Oregon States’ Men’s Basketball team and what he thinks about the program. Counts’ tells Canzano how he wants to see them do better because that’s still his team and how he always will want to see them do better.

They then discuss Counts’ being drafted by the Celtics and his reactions on playing with Bill Russell. He explains how winning teams have the true concept of basketball, along with structure, team play and sacrifice.  Canzano asks Counts’ about his nephew Chael Sonnen, the cage fighter who will be fighting in the world championships this year. They also discuss his family life and how he somewhat coached his sons, but tried to make them comfortable with his coaching.  Counts’ also mentioned listening to 750 the Game and compared the NBA flagrant fouls to the fouls in the 60’s and 70’s.
