It’s the day we’ve all been waiting for…the opening ceremony of the Olympics will be kicking off in London, England at 1:00 PST.  The BFT himself, John Canzano, joined Chad on The Morning Sports Page today to preview the event.

Speaking of the opening ceremonies, the American flag will be carried by Portland’s own Mariel Zagunis, who took home gold medals in fencing at the 2004 Athens games and the 2008 Beijing games.  This is actually the second consecutive time an Oregonian has carried the flag.  Lopez Lomong, who lives in Lake Oswego and trains in Beaverton, carried the flag at the 2008 games.

Aside from the opening ceremonies, one of the main storylines of the games is Michael Phelps’ pursuit of Olympic history.  He already holds the record for most Gold medals achieved at one Olympiad – after he took home eight at the 2008 games in Athens.  But if he gets three gold medals in London, he will set the record for most gold medals ever obtained by an Olympian.

Although this is a very likely outcome, Canzano insists that Phelps still has his work cut out for him.  After is recent losses in some big competitions and his public association with Marijuana, he is no longer the intimidating guy he was in Athens.  Furthermore, the toughest competitor he faces may actually be his own teammate, Ryan Lochte.

Take a listen as Canzano previews tonight’s opening ceremonies and be on the lookout for a great Ray Felton one liner.
