The Portland Timbers took a brief break from their MLS schedule to host one of Spain's premiere football clubs. Valencia FC made the long trip across the pond to take on the Timbers at JELD-WEN Wednesday night.
The Spanish powerhouse proved to be too much for the Timbers, as Valencia walked away with a 1-0 victory when the final whistle blew.
Despite the loss, the Timbers played well in their effort, and plenty of reserves got valuable playing time.
The game was a scoreless draw until Pablo Piatti blasted a shot past Troy Perkins in the 41st minute.
That would be all the scoring in the game, but the Timbers almost drew blood a couple times.
Their first threat came in the 7th minute when a Kalif Alhassan shot was stopped by a diving save by Valencia's keeper.
In the second half, Bright Dike and Alhassan both had a couple more shots on goal that just couldn't find the back of the net.
The Timbers are now off until Saturday when they take on the Vancouver Whitecaps at JELD-WEN in their first Cascadia Cup game.
