The NBA Cares About Autism AwarenessApril is Autism Awareness Month and the National Basketball Association is one of the biggest supporters of Autism Awareness. On Wednesday, Tom Carelli the Senior Vice President of the NBA joined the show to talk about the NBA’s autism awareness partnership as well as his own personal story of a daughter who has grown up with autism. Carelli said that the biggest thing that he and the NBA is trying to accomplish is simply to make more people aware of autism and how to test their children for the disease. “That’s been the primary focus of what we’ve been trying to do is to try and raise awareness, get people to understand what it’s all about and most importantly, to reach out to newly diagnosed parents with autism to send the message that they’re not alone and there are people who can help them and that we would all be in it together to try and do so.” Carelli also said that people and organizations have been very helpful and supportive of trying to increase the awareness of autism in children. “It’s amazing how much you can do if you ask. You can ask for help. You can try and do this and you can get people to be aware of this and to see how important communicating is and how important discussing this is.” And finally, he discussed some of the things that the NBA has done to improve the Autism Awareness campaign. “One of the things that we did that is very visible that’s made a tremendous impact is just the autism speaks blue puzzle piece pins that our coaches wear, that our broadcasters wear on World Autism Awareness Day.” Take a listen to the interview and be sure to get your children tested for autism early.
